Don’t you ever get tired of these cheap, phony posers? Their silence put George Bush in the White Bush—and now put a steel-drivin’ man in the news. But my, how they pander to you about Rove! Don’t you ever get sick of their fake, phony fervor? Will you ever insist that they stand up and speak about your country’s recent history? One quibble: These posers don't come cheap.

Long but well worth a thoughtful read: Being Nothing -- George W. Bush as Presidential Simulacrum, by Carol Hamilton.
What is the origin of simulacra like the current President of the United States? When I argue that Bush is not "real," I do not mean that he was manufactured in a secret factory, owned by a corporation like the Karp Cartel and controlled by a powerful conspiracy.
But I will speculate that in a post-literate, hyperreal world, those accretions of historical time and psychological reflection that produce subjectivity tend to disperse before they constitute a deep, coherent self. The result can be a personality like that of Bush — intellectually narrow, emotionally shallow, working with an abridged vocabulary, like a novice in a foreign language class.
He is a commodity produced by contemporary American culture, with its bizarre admixture of consumerism, television, worship of celebrities, and glib Christian fundamentalism.
Thanks to commenter Uncle $cam at All Spin Zone for pointing the way.

Townhall might want to rethink this lineup. Visit the site and a "Support Judge Roberts" popup nags you to email your Senators. But then the currently featured Ann Coulter column offers Townhall visitors several reasons not to bother.
[I]t makes no difference that conservatives in the White House are assuring us Roberts can be trusted. We got the exact same assurances from officials working for the last president Bush about David Hackett Souter.Quick -- somebody contact Message Control Central.
I believe their exact words were, "Read our lips; Souter's a reliable conservative."
