Is
Rich Lowry TRYING to be offensive, or is he merely stupid?
The Senate Indian Affairs Committee held a high-profile hearing last week into the shady work of Republican-party lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who is accused of fleecing Indian tribes. Everyone professed great hand-wringing sympathy for the tribes over how badly they had allegedly been treated. Oh, please. This is a trail of tears partly of their own making.
For those unfamiliar with
the Trail of Tears, this is from Wikipedia:
The Trail of Tears refers to the forced removal of the Cherokee American Indian tribe by the U.S. federal government, which resulted in the deaths of about 4,000 Cherokee Indians. In the Cherokee language, the event is called Nunna daul Tsuny — "the trail where they cried."
Of course, offensiveness and stupidity are not mutually exclusive conditions, especially among Townhall columnists, so my conclusion is:
both.
